– Choosing to follow God even if I don’t like it or understand it –
A great picture of trusting God is jumping out of a plane with a parachute. Jumping out of a plane doesn’t make any sense without a parachute. You know you can’t fly and you know that it will be certain death without it. But when you jump you are trusting that the parachute will be ready for you and it will be strong enough to keep you safe.
In the same way, when you trust God you are saying, “I will do whatever you ask and it doesn’t even need to make sense.” You are choosing to believe that God will be there and that He is strong enough to keep you safe. But why would you do that? Because He IS strong enough (Psalm 118:14) and He IS faithful enough (Isaiah 43:2) to be there! And in addition to that:
- God is good enough to do what is right (Psalm 86:5)
- God is wise enough to know what is the best thing to do (1 Corinthians 1:25)
- God is loving enough to care about you personally (1 Peter 5:7)
This is a God worth trusting! But trust isn’t about feelings. Just because you’re scared doesn’t mean that you aren’t trusting. Even the bravest people will still feel their heart pounding with the fierce intensity of nerves and fear when they jump out of a plane for the first time with a parachute. What matters is what you choose. Are you choosing to trust God with your life or are you choosing to follow your fears?
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” – Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)
