For this STEM Project, called Light Scavengers, you can use this link to find the details of the experiment.  This website is not Christian and this link is purely a science experiment to better understand how light interacts with different types of objects.  After (or during) the experiment you can use the following discussion questions to tie these scientific principles to biblical principles.

Some good discussion questions to engage:

  • Why do you think we can use the word transparency when we talk about being truthful and not hiding things?
  • Do you think that we should be transparent (not hiding anything) with God?
  • Does God need us to be transparent if he already knows everything?
    • If God already knows everything, why does it matter if we’re transparent or not with him?
God never forces a heart to change.  So when anybody is transparent with them it shows that their heart is willing to let God work in their life and God responds well.

“But if we confess our sins to God, he can always be trusted to forgive us and take our sins away.” – 1 John 1:9 CEV
  • What happens when you continue to put translucent layers one on top of another?
    • If you try to look through one layer that is translucent can you still see some light?
      Yes, but it is blurry.
    • If you put two and then three and then four layers on top, can you still see through it?  If you keep going what will eventually happen?
It will eventually become opaque and you can’t see through it.

      • How could this be an example of what happens when we try to hide the truth?
When we are hiding from God, we will develop “blind spots” in our life and we won’t experience his light and truth in our lives like we want to.

“People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.” – Proverbs 28:13 (NLT)

  • If you have a transparent layer with an opaque or translucent layer behind it, how could you be able to see clearly all the way through?
Remove the translucent or opaque layers

    • What does this tell you about what you might want to do with your own heart? If you want to be transparent with God or with others what do you need to do?
Be active in removing anything that causes confusion or hides the truth.  “Bring the truth to light”
    • Why might that be a hard thing to do?Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the LORD.” And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. – Psalm 32:5 (NLT)
