A great STEM project to do with kids is planting flowers, fruits, or vegetables. Depending on the age of your kids, there are many ways to go about it. Before planting, you can talk about the science of planting seeds and how they grow. There are many videos on this but here is a great short video that most kids will enjoy:
After watching the video you can talk with the kids about what they’re looking forward to see. You can have all sorts of seeds to plant ready for the kids to plant in a place you have already planned out. You can plant seeds that take longer to grow and talk about long-term goals, patience, delayed gratification, investment, or intentionality. Or you can choose faster-sprouting seeds such as kidney beans, sweet pea, and chives.
After planting the seeds, you can take time over the next days, weeks, and maybe even months to revisit the plants, care for them, and have more conversations about the character traits you discussed earlier.
There are many stories and parables in the Bible that have to do with seeds, planting, and harvesting. This could also be a great opportunity to talk about any of these great stories.
Share what you’ve learned or talked about in this project, let’s keep growing together!
