Biomimicry is learning from nature to create something. Many scientists and engineers use what they observe in nature to create new or improved products. Some examples are Velcro from observing prickly seeds that stick to clothing and boat hulls from the shapes of fish! Isn’t it amazing that God’s creations can inspire such great inventions?
Let’s explore biomimicry today.
1. Think of something that interests you. It can be anything – cars, sports, art, music, clothing, games, pets.
2. Brainstorm with the family about how your chosen topic can be used to design something useful for people.
3. Ask:
– What animal or nature objects does my topic remind me of?
– What unique features do these animals/objects have?
– How can I use these characteristics to design something useful?
4. Draw your idea on paper and label parts and materials.
5. Post it and admire! Remember, you can always go back to it to make changes to improve the design.
6. Discussion Questions:
– How does Biomimicry demonstrate inspiration?
– How do you define inspiration?
– How can you inspire others around you?
