The Bible tells us a lot about the importance of <\/span>kindness<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 We know that the God of the Bible is a loving and kind God that is moved by compassion <\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>Mark 6:34<\/span><\/a>; <\/span>Luke 15:3-7<\/span><\/a>; <\/span>Isaiah 40:11<\/span><\/a>)<\/span>.\u00a0 We are told that it\u2019s God\u2019s kindness that <\/span>leads<\/span><\/i> us to salvation and repentance (<\/span>Titus 3:4-5<\/span><\/a>; <\/span>Romans 2:4<\/span><\/a>; <\/span>Romans 11:22<\/span><\/a>).\u00a0 God modeled kindness in his forgiveness and instructed us to <\/span>also<\/span><\/i> be kind towards others because of how he treated us (<\/span>Ephesians 4:32<\/span><\/a>; <\/span>Colossians 3:12<\/span><\/a>).\u00a0 And as one of the fruits of the Spirit <\/span>(<\/span>Galatians 5:22-23<\/span><\/a>), <\/span>\u00a0we know that true kindness can only be produced in us as a result of God\u2019s work in our lives (<\/span>2 Corinthians 6:4-6<\/span><\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But long before any scientific research was commissioned, God declared that there are benefits of being kind.\u00a0 We\u2019re told that those who put love into action through kindness will benefit themselves (<\/span>Proverbs 11:17<\/span><\/a>), they will be repaid by the Lord (<\/span>Proverbs 19:17<\/span><\/a>), and it will result in great rewards (<\/span>Luke 6:35<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s only recently that we have started seeing how science has started catching up to what God said long ago.\u00a0 Here are 5 insights about kindness that research has revealed:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. <\/span>Helping Others can Boost Energy<\/b><\/h3>\n

According to <\/span>Christine Carter, UC Berkeley, Greater Good Science Center: <\/span><\/a>\u201cAbout half of participants in one study reported that they feel stronger and more energetic after helping others; many also reported feeling calmer and less depressed, with increased feelings of self-worth\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Being Kind to Others Can Increase Happiness<\/b><\/h3>\n

In <\/span>this recent study<\/span><\/a>, participants were found to have a higher level of happiness after 7 days of performing acts of kindness – whether it was an acquaintance or even a stranger.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Even Just Observing Acts of Kindness Increases Happiness<\/b><\/h3>\n

In the <\/span>study<\/span><\/a> previously mentioned, even just actively <\/span>observing<\/span><\/i> acts of kindness every day for a seven day stretch were shown to increase levels of happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. <\/span>Showing Kindness Can Increase Serotonin<\/b><\/h3>\n

According to <\/span>Marcie Hall, MD<\/span><\/a>, research has shown the increase of serotonin in the body of those who show kindness.\u00a0 Serotonin is \u201cthe feel-good chemical heals your wounds, calms you down, and makes you happy\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

5. <\/span>Kindness May Help You Live Longer<\/b><\/h3>\n

In her book \u201cRaising Happiness; In Pursuit of Joyful Kids and Happier Parents\u201d<\/span><\/a>, Christine Carter, Ph.D, executive director of UC Berkeley\u2019s Greater Good Science Center conveys \u201cPeople who volunteer tend to experience fewer aches and pains. Giving help to others protects overall health twice as much as aspirin protects against heart disease. People 55 and older who volunteer for two or more organizations have an impressive 44% lower likelihood of dying early, and that\u2019s after sifting out every other contributing factor, including physical health, exercise, gender, habits like smoking, marital status and many more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
